What are newsgroups? Newsgroups are a specific kind of online community where people meet to discuss given topics. They are similar to forums found all over the Internet, but unlike web-based forums you may visit using a web browser, newsgroups require special news reading software. The benefit to using special software is that all newsgroups use the same interface, and you may already be familiar with that interface. How can I read the FlanneryPubs.com newsgroups? If you're using Microsoft Windows, you probably already have a news reader installed on your computer. By clicking a "news://" link such as news://news.flannerypubs.com/, that reader should be launched automatically and directed to the specified newsgroup. For example, if you're using Windows XP, Outlook Express is probably your default news reader. On Windows Vista, Windows Mail is probably the default. If you've downloaded Windows Live Mail onto either Windows XP or Vista, you may also use it. What if I don't have a default news reader? You may not have a default news client if you're using a Mac, Linux, or even a Windows 7 beta, so you'll have to find a news reader that works with your environment. All news readers will allow you to add a newsgroup account. For FlanneryPubs.com, use "news.flannerypubs.com" as the server. The port is 119 (it's the default NNTP port). If the news reader asks about logon credentials, just skip that section. All posting to FlanneryPubs.com is currently anonymous. Do I need to know anything else? This service is beginning a beta trial, so you may encounter connectivity issues. If you run into problems using this service, please send a detailed description of the problem to the webmaster. And if you're extra curious, be sure to read all about the NNTP protocol. |
